History

The Quaker Cupboard Thrift Shop opened in September of 2009. The hope was that money received from sales would go towards funding the cost of food for an emergency food pantry. For years, people had come to the church on an occasional basis to ask for food assistance. We started small with donations of usable clothing, household items, toys, etc., from our members and set up an attractive little shop. Before long, we had donations from non-members as well and a steady flow of loyal customers. Our food pantry began as a small cupboard in one of the Sunday School rooms. We kept it well stocked with non-perishables and helped out everyone who came. However, the shop kept expanding and it soon became necessary to move the shop to larger quarters in our Fellowship Building across the way. We applied to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina to become a partner agency and achieved that status in March of 2011. We now are buying food from Second Harvest at a very reasonable cost. In addition, we still buy additional items as needed and cheerfully accept food donations given to the pantry.
